Saline removal is a gentle yet highly effective method for lightening permanent makeup. By introducing a specially formulated saline solution into the skin, the pigment particles are gradually broken down and eliminated through natural bodily processes.
Saline removal is safe and affective but it can take a number of sessions to achieve a full removal depending on the tattoos age, colour, depth and saturation. Over multiple sessions, we can significantly reduce the visibility of unwanted pigment or even completely remove it.
* All our appointments include a full consultation to ensure you get the right technique for your skin & desired results.
But what if you don't want to get rid of your permanent makeup entirely?
Not everyone needs removal. Sometimes it's just the colour that needs fixing, not the shape. Saline removal is a safe and effective method of removing unwanted permanent makeup. Unlike traditional tattoo removal methods that involve laser treatments or chemical peels, saline removal offers a gentler and non-invasive approach. It works by using a specially formulated saline solution that is tattooed into the skin, much like your original permanent makeup procedure, breaking down the pigments and encouraging natural healing processes to remove the unwanted ink.
Saline removal works by using the skins natural ability to heal and a specially formulated saline solution.
Implanting the specially formulated saline solution into the skin triggers the natural process of Osmosis. Since the solution contains a higher concentration of salt than the body, it initiates the movement of fluid (and pigment) upwards towards the skin's surface. During the skins natural healing process the scabs that form contain the trapped pigment, thus the pigment is removed when the scabs fall off, resulting in a lighter tattoo.
It is impossible to give you an exact number of sessions required for complete removal. The number of saline removal treatments needed depends on several factors, including your skin type, the depth of the original pmu, the age of the tattoo, the type of tattoo or permanent makeup pigment used and your desired outcome. In some cases, lightening is sufficient before covering the area with new work, while in other cases, complete removal is desired. Typically, 6-12 tattoo removal treatments are required for complete removal.
How should I prepare for my saline removal session?
Before your treatment, avoid exfoliating skin care products, including Retinol. After treatment, expect redness and crusting for 7-10 days, so avoid significant events during this time.
The anaesthetics we use will ensure you are comfortable throughout most of the procedure. However, during the end of the procedure the saline solution will produce a small stinging sensation that will cause a small discomfort for a moment. A bit like the feeling of applying salt to a wound but it will subside quickly.
Everybody will differ but the average healing time takes about 7-10 days for the scab to naturally fall off but the time between sessions is 8 weeks to allow the skin complete time to heal. For the best results it is crucial to keep the treated area dry and avoid touching it as much as possible. Allowing the crust to remain in place for 7-10 days will lead to a better outcome.

Saline removal and Laser Tattoo Removal are two very different methods of removing tattoos. Saline removal uses the body's natural healing process to draw the pigment to the surface of the skin. On the other hand, Laser Tattoo Removal employs heat bursts to break up large pigment particles, which are then absorbed by the body.
Both saline and laser removal methods offer unique advantages. For permanent makeup, saline removal is the better option as it can work on all pigment types and colours. However for dark and saturated colours, laser tattoo removal is good, although it may not be effective for some pigment colours used in eyebrow procedures.
Before deciding which option to choose, it's important to consider the following factors:
Pigment colour: Saline removal works on all pigment colour whereas laser removal will not remove yellow or in some cases red pigment.
Skin type: Saline removal may be more suitable for people with sensitive skin, as laser removal can cause skin irritation and scarring.
Cost: Laser removal tends to be more expensive than saline removal, so it's important to consider your budget.
Pain tolerance: Both options can be painful, but some people find saline removal to be less painful than laser removal.
Ultimately, the decision between saline and laser removal will depend on your individual needs and preferences.
